Following this principle, the fixed services and after them, the wireless services have been provided to our customers over own access networks (Fiber, Wi-Fi, WiMAX).
However, due to regulatory constraints in the use of the spectrum, Euskaltel has not been allowed to provide mobile services to its customer with own network. This service has been provided through a service provider model agreement since year 1999 till year 2006. In year 2006, an historic milestone has made possible for Euskaltel to also reach the objective of becoming an Independent Mobile Operator, and thus, operating its own network also for Mobile services. In order to do that, Euskaltel has adopted the Full Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) model, with own CORE network (MSC/HLR and Services Layer).
The Department of Technology is in charge of RTD in Euskaltel. It provides the technological Strategies for the company in the mid-long term, according to the business objectives of the Company.
The research lines in Euskaltel have also been designed following this Strategic Objective. In the period from 2000 to 2006, the research resources have been focussed on the emerging technologies for enhancement of the fixed network from Euskaltel with wireless networks, based on WiFi / WiMAX (WxAN). In parallel, efforts have also been devoted to the evolution of the telecommunications services from Euskaltel from triple-play (Voice, Internet & TV) structure, to quadruple-play (Voice, Internet, TV & wireless) structure, through the development of mobility services.
During this period, the RTD and Innovation activities have been therefore, developed in the following areas, namely:Once this objective has been reached, the action lines for Euskaltel RTD and Innovation in the following period 2007-2010, will be extended to complement the innovative product and services portfolio in a converging environment.
